What Is JSON and Why Is It Used?
6 min read
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight, human-readable data format used to store and transmit data between servers and web applications. Despite its name, JSON is language-agnostic — it is used in Python, Java, Go, Ruby, and virtually every modern programming language.
Basic JSON Syntax
{
"name": "Alice",
"age": 30,
"active": true,
"scores": [95, 87, 92],
"address": {
"city": "New York",
"country": "US"
}
}
JSON Data Types
- String: "hello world"
- Number: 42, 3.14
- Boolean: true, false
- Null: null
- Array: [1, 2, 3]
- Object: {"key": "value"}
Where Is JSON Used?
- REST APIs: The standard format for sending/receiving data between client and server
- Configuration files: package.json, tsconfig.json, etc.
- Databases: MongoDB, PostgreSQL JSONB, Firebase
- Data exchange: Replacing XML in most modern applications
Common JSON Errors
- Using single quotes instead of double quotes
- Trailing commas after the last item in an object or array
- Unescaped special characters in strings
