How to Compress an Image Without Losing Too Much Quality
6 min read
Large images slow down websites and consume more bandwidth. The good news is that you can usually reduce image file sizes by 50–80% with little or no visible quality difference.
Choose the Right Format First
- Photos → WebP or JPG (quality 70–85%)
- Graphics with transparency → WebP or PNG
- Simple icons → SVG (vector, scales perfectly)
Understanding Quality Settings
For JPG and WebP, quality is typically set on a scale of 0–100:
- 85–95%: Near-lossless, minimal size savings
- 70–85%: Good balance — recommended for most web images
- 50–70%: Noticeable compression, good for thumbnails and non-critical images
- Below 50%: Significant quality degradation, visible artifacts
Resize Before Compressing
The biggest gains often come from resizing. If your image will be displayed at 800px wide, there is no reason to serve a 4000px original. Use our Image Resizer first, then compress.
Use Our Free Image Compressor
- Go to Image Compressor
- Upload your JPG, PNG, or WebP image
- Adjust the quality slider
- Download the compressed image
